Definition Selection method
Usually with a larger population, not all units of observation can be analyzed. Therefore, a smaller sample is drawn from the population, whereby the survey results aims at being representative of the entire population. The selection method for the survey's sample is of high importance for this purpose. In particular, it is important that the sample is randomly selected. Only a randomly selected sample can be, at least theoretically, representative of its underlying population.
