Press freedom index in Austria 2013-2023
Austria's press freedom index in 2023 was 77.4, marking a slight improvement compared to the previous year, but still a deterioration from years prior to 2021. The index presents an overview of the plurality and independence of the media and how safe and free it is for journalist to do their job, with higher scores indicating a better situation for the press and lower scores a worse one. Between 2013 and 2022, Austria's press freedom index score decreased by almost 14 points, and in 2022 the source noted a number of key issues contributing to this, including the concentration of the daily newspaper market, far-right opponents of COVID-19 measures and vaccines assaulting journalists, and continued attempts to influence the press, to name but three. The country ranked Germany, France, and Luxembourg in 2023.
