According to a survey conducted in the Philippines, about 25 percent of the respondents from the urban location stated that they own a formal account from a financial provider in 2017. In the same survey, 35 percent of the respondents who owned a formal account were from the Metro Manila Area.

Multi-stage random sampling methodology was employed in selecting the respondents. Computer-assisted personal interviewing (CAPI) was administered wherein the field interviewers used a tablet/smartphone to record answers given by the respondents during the face-to-face interview. The sample consisted of adults from both Metro Manila Area (MMA) and areas outside MMA (Balance Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao).
