Medal count by country in the Women's 100m at the Summer Olympics 1928-2020
The United States has been the most successful country in the Women's 100 meter sprint at the Olympics. In total, U.S. athletes have won nine golds, and 18 overall medals. Jamaica, however, has been the most successful nation in this event in the past two decades, taking the four most recent gold medals, and 10 of the 12 medals awarded since 2008 (and over half of those awarded since 1992). Jamaica's Shelly-Ann Fraser-Price is the most successful athlete in this event, with two golds, one silver, and one bronze medal to her name. The U.S.' Marion Jones is the only athlete to have been stripped of a medal in this event, after the five medals she won in the Sydney Olympics in 2000 were rescinded in 2007, due to her involvement in the BALCO scandal. The 2000 gold medal was not awarded to the runner-up, Ekaterini Thanou of Greece, due to her own history of doping violations; instead the bronze medallist, Jamaica's Tanya Lawrence, was elevated to a joint silver, and fourth placed Merlene Ottey (also of Jamaica) was given the bronze.
