Rakuten Insight in April 2020 on panic buying after the coronavirus outbreak, around 96 percent of male Japanese respondents and a slightly lower rate of 93 percent of female respondents stated that they had not engaged in panic buying because of the coronavirus pandemic. In the same survey, the majority of respondents who engaged in panic buying indicated that they stocked up on dry food items such as rice, noodles, pasta, and flour, or hygiene paper products such as toilet paper, paper towels, and tissues.
