Change in greenhouse gas emissions in the European Union 1990-2021, by sector
Greenhouse gas emissions from energy supply in the European Union (EU-27) were 44 percent lower in 2021 than they were in 1990. This was the largest percentage change in emissions of any industry sector during this period. This dramatic reduction is due to a transition towards renewable energy sources across the European Union, and a shift away from coal power.
Most industry sectors have experienced emissions reductions over the past three decades, with the exception of transportation. As of 2021, domestic transportation emissions in the EU were 16.3 percent higher than they were in 1990.
