Japan: number of city OS implementations 2030

The cumulative number of city OS implementations for achieving smart city projects was forecast to grow from nine cases in fiscal year 2020 to more than 330 cases by fiscal year 2030. The source expected that most implementations until fiscal year 2023 would be done by government-led businesses, with implementations by autonomous businesses making up a larger share in the second half of the decade. The announcement of the Super City Initiative, which was expected for 2023, the Osaka Smart City Strategy, which is planned to make use of the Osaka Kansai Expo in 2025, as well as the establishment of a monetization structure were considered influential factors regarding this development.

The number of implementations is calculated by adding up the city OS implementation cases administered by government-led businesses (verification projects that the government has publicly invited) and autonomous businesses (voluntarily budgeted by local governments and specific districts) for achieving smart city projects. Research objects were providers of data coordination platforms as well as providers of distributed data utilization platforms.
