Share of French who used illicit drugs during the year 1992-2017, by type of drugs
Annual drug consumption in France has varied widely by drug type between 1992 and 2017. While heroin use remains at a low level between 0.1 and 0.3 percent of respondents, the rate of cannabis use has risen sharply in 25 years. In 1992, 4.4 percent of respondents reported using cannabis in that year. In 2017, it was over ten percent. The share of cocaine users has also increased over the same period, with a more significant increase since 2000 from 0.3 to 1.6 percent in 17 years. In the 2010s, it is the consumption of ecstasy/MDMA that has increased significantly, with a threefold increase in the rate of users.
