Across the United States, roughly 50 percent of employees reported that they faced surprise hospital bills due to unexpected serious health events, accidents, or hospitalizations in both 2020 and 2021. In 2021, 88 percent of U.S. employees have faced unexpected costs (most often medical-related), compared to 92 percent in 2020.
