Support toward state support of cinemas in Russia 2022
Three out of ten Russians believed that their government should allocate some of the state budget for cinema support in June 2022. The country's cinema industry saw a decline in visits after major international film distributors, such as Paramount Pictures, Universal Pictures, Sony Pictures, and Walt Disney, stopped operating in Russia in response to its invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. Having not yet recovered from the negative impact of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, cinemas across Russia reported bearing significant losses in the spring of 2022, which was expected to result in closure of hundreds of movie theaters. Already in May 2022, the number of cinema screens open in Russia was eight percent lower than in January 2022.
