Portugal: commercial and off-highway vehicle sales by vehicle type and region 2021
Portugal within the European light commercial vehicle market
In 2021, Portugal was among the 15 leading markets for light commercial vehicle sales in Europe, behind Switzerland and Sweden. Portugal recorded one of the highest motorization rates for commercial vehicles and buses in Europe, ranking above the neighboring Spain. However, the country was not among the European leaders in alternative fuel light commercial vehicle (LCV) sales. In 2021, diesel light goods vehicles held the largest share of the total Portuguese LCV fleet at nearly 1.3 million registrations compared to 1,631 battery-electric vans.
Similarities across segments
The Portuguese heavy commercial vehicle fleet was also mostly comprised of diesel trucks and road tractors, highlighting certain homogenous characteristics of the overall commercial vehicle fleet in Portugal. European brands also tended to be best-sellers across segments: The Swedish Volvo and German Mercedes-Benz led the heavy commercial vehicle market in 2022 with some 768 and 608 sales, respectively. The light commercial vehicle segment was also dominated by European brands, with the French Peugeot, Renault, and Citroën selling the most LCVs in Portugal in 2022.
