ANZ: estimated airline loyalty program value by airline 2023

As of January 2023, the value of the Qantas Frequent Flyer loyalty program was estimated to amount to over 4.2 billion U.S. dollars. In comparison, Virgin Australia's Velocity Frequent Flyer program was valued at around 1.4 billion U.S. dollars that same year.

Each airline was assessed based on revised inputs across the country, airline, and loyalty program profile. The airline's business assessment took into consideration: passenger numbers, the airline's profile (full-service vs low cost carriers), revenue passenger kilometers (RPK's), current and future fleet, the airline's financial health, and the airline's home market dominance. The loyalty program assessment took into consideration: credit card dynamics and the redemption options of the program to create an 'attractiveness' score for each program. Changes in valuations can be traced back to factors including GDP per capita growth, the airline's credit rating, the attractiveness of the loyalty program, and the overall size of the airline.
