Premature deaths related to air pollution in Portugal 2021, by pollutant
Exposure to fine particulate matter (PM2.5) was the leading cause of premature death due to air pollution in Portugal, having accounted for more than 2,000 premature deaths in 2021. This was followed by exposure to nitrogen dioxide (NO₂) and to ozone (O₃), which were attributable to approximately 550 and 460 premature deaths, respectively.
