U.S. vehicle sales of North American car brands 2019

The statistic shows the leading North American car brands during the fourth quarter of 2019, based on sales in the United States. In the fourth quarter of 2019, Ford sold around 565,400 vehicles under the Ford brand and 33,355 units under the Lincoln brand.

Between July and September 2019, light trucks accounted for almost 55 percent of Ford's U.S. wholesales. The love affair between U.S. customers and light trucks came to a halt when fuel prices peaked in 2009 and miles per gallon costs soared. In 2015, U.S. car buyers and American light truck manufacturers rekindled their love and both SUVs and light trucks are back in demand: Among the Detroit Three automakers, shipments of pickup trucks and SUVs rose by double digit percentages between 2014 and 2015. To a large extent, these models are brands manufactured and sold by American original equipment manufacturers (OEMs). In 2019, Ford’s F-Series truck was the best-selling light truck in the United States, while FCA’s Ram Pickup and GM’s Chevrolet Silverado came in second and third. The increase in light truck sales and SUVs comes at the disadvantage of other segments, including midsized and compact cars, which are mainly produced by Asian OEMs, including Toyota, Honda, and Nissan.

General Motors was the largest North America-based car manufacturer during the fourth quarter of 2019. The company sold more than 734,000 light vehicles in the United States. GM sells vehicles under its various brands, including Chevrolet, Buick, GMC, and Cadillac. Although under the wing of a European carmaker, Chrysler is often still considered one of the Detroit Big Three automakers; Chrysler’s holding company, FCA, owns the Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, and Ram brands. Meanwhile, Ford sells vehicles mainly under its Ford and Lincoln brands.
