In the first quarter of 2023 there were 16,543 self-harm incidents at prisons in England and Wales, a peak of self-harm incidents during this provided time period. Self-harm incidents have increased substantially at prisons in England and Wales, with just 4,908 incidents reported in the first quarter of 2004.
