* The excess winter mortality (EWM) index is calculated as excess winter deaths divided by the average non-winter deaths, expressed as a percentage. An EWM index of 20 would show that there were 20 percent more deaths in winter compared with the non-winter period.

** Figures are based on deaths occurring in each period (August through to the following July). Number of deaths from January to July 2022 are provisional."

The source includes the following information: " Underlying cause of disease is defined using the international Classification of Diseases, Tenth Revision (ICD-10).

Figures from 2012 to 2020 are based on deaths excluding those that had COVID-19 mentioned on the death certificate. While figures in 2021 have been calculated using deaths from all causes including those that had COVID-19 mentioned on the death certificate.
