Share of elderly people living in France 1970-2020
While in 1970 the over-65s represented about 13 percent of the population, the share increased to reach its peak in 2020 with 20.56 percent.
Ageing has accelerated since the early 2000s with the arrival of baby boomers in this age group.
Although the ageing of its population is inevitable, France should experience it less than other European countries. It has the highest fertility rate in Europe, with an average of around two children per woman.
