Global development assistance for various illnesses and diseases has been variable for many years. Depending on the severity of the illness and the relevance of the illness to the agencies' development goals, funding can change drastically. Development assistance for health with a focus on HIV/AIDS has increased from 379 million U.S. dollars in 1990 to an estimated 9 billion dollars in 2020. Most notably in 2020 is the drastic increase in funding for 'other infectious diseases' which COVID-19 is categorized under. Of the 16 billion in total, 14 billion U.S. dollars went towards COVID-19.
