In 2022, the United States had approximately 6,162 sand and gravel mines that were active. That was a decrease of 43 since the year before. Stone mines were the second most numerous among active mines in the U.S. that year, with 4,271 active mines.

In total, the U.S. had 12,563 active mines across the country in 2022.
