Statista trend report on the global robotics market and application areas

Robotics

Automation is getting off the starting blocks to considerably influence today's working environment. Smart factories are more than visions for the future. In 2019 already, more than 850 robots were installed per 10,000 workers in the manufacturing sector in South Korea. However, recent events, including the COVID-19 pandemic and the China-United States trade war affected different parts of the market in contrasting ways and have shaped the evolution of the robotics landscape.

A multitude of sources, ranging from industry associations to market research companies, were used to set up a proprietary market model to forecast the mid-term development for the robotics market. The analysis starts at 2018, with a forecast until 2022. The expected global sales volume for the worldwide robotics market is 45 billion U.S. dollars by 2022. This is an increase of 44 percent from 2018 to 2022.

Starting with the influence automation and robotics have on the economy and the labor market, this report analyzes the robotics market as a whole. It takes an in-depth look at the industrial robotics market as well as the service robotics market, broken down into commercial sales and personal sales.

Table of contents

The robotic industry can be divided into industrial and service robotics. The industrial sector saw larger sales in 2018, but sales of service robots are expected to exceed those of industrial robots from 2019 until at least 2022. Industrial robots are defined by their use in a manufacturing environment. Service robots are divided into commercial and personal robotics: Commercial service robots are used to perform a service in an industrial environment, while personal service robots are deployed in private households.

The vision of smart factories, the center of Industry 4.0, causes a high market growth in industrial robotics. The key markets and drivers of this robotics subsegment can be found in five countries, which are expected to defend their leadership during the forecast period. The sales value of new industrial robot installations is analyzed by application area, such as electronics and automotive, with a focus on the most important countries.

The main advantages of smart factories are flexible production, optimized logistics, customer focused solutions, intelligent use of data, and a resource saving cycle economy. Numerous industrial robots are already in use to achieve this vision. However, according to many industry experts, the future lies in the collaboration of humans and robots, so-called cobots.

Not only factories can be smart, but the entire infrastructure, both in companies and in households. Service robots gain importance in professional as well as private settings as they offer increased productivity and convenience. The sales value of service robots is analyzed by application areas, such as medical and logistic robots as commercial service robots and robots for domestic tasks as private service robots, with a focus on continents.
