Companies in Hungary - facts & figures

The number of enterprises operating in Hungary followed an increasing trend until 2021, when it peaked at 1.9 million; however, 2022 introduced a slight decrease in the number of companies in the country. The majority of the businesses are located in the capital, Budapest, and Pest county surrounding it, but Sabolcs-Szatmár-Bereg and Bács-Kiskun county are also home to a considerable number of enterprises. As of 2022, the highest number of businesses carried out professional, scientific, and technical activities, while a further 137 thousand enterprises operated in the wholesale and retail trade sector, and another 114 thousand in construction.

Leading companies

As of 2021, MOL Nyrt., the multinational oil and gas company with its headquarters in Budapest, was the leading company in Hungary considering its revenue, which totaled nearly six quadrillion forints. MVM Zrt., the state-owned energy company, ranked second with an annual revenue of 2.9 quadrillion forints. As of 2022, MPF Holding was the first-ranking domestically-owned company with an estimated value of over 400 billion forints. Moreover, it was also the number one family business of the year. In terms of funding, 4iG, the IT service management company, benefitted from the highest amount of investments in 2022, totaling approximately 890 million U.S. dollars.

Foreign enterprises

Due to its developed infrastructure, well-educated and affordable workforce, easy company formation procedure, and low corporate tax rate, Hungary offers excellent business opportunities for foreign investors. Foreign enterprises have been paying a considerable contribution to the country’s economy over the past decade, as the total assets of foreign-controlled branches and subsidiaries equaled approximately 49 percent of Hungary’s GDP in 2021. During the same year, the largest number of foreign-owned enterprises operating in Hungary were associated with Ukraine and Germany, totaling over four thousand companies, respectively. As of 2020, there were over 15 thousand foreign-controlled affiliates in the country, with the highest number of them operating in the wholesale and retail trade sector.
