Wi-Fi wins in connection popularity
In 2021, the revenue from electronic communication services in Czechia amounted to over 120 billion Czech koruna. It had stagnated for a few years and even decreased compared to 2009 when it reached 133 billion koruna. On the other hand, the household consumption expenditure on telephone and telefax services increased continuously up to 2021, reaching nearly 75 billion koruna. Similarly, the internet penetration of Czech households has risen, with nine out of ten households having access to the internet as of 2022. Wi-Fi was the most popular of these connections, followed closely by xDSL and FTTH/B, which use telephone lines and optic fiber for data transmission, respectively.Mobile telephony rises, fixed-line falls
In 2021, the revenue of fixed-line telephony amounted to over 48 billion koruna, with around 54 percent of it made up of retail revenue from end consumers, with the rest coming from sales to businesses. This was entirely different for mobile telephony. Its overall revenue was higher by more than 10 billion. However, the vast majority of it came from retail. In general, businesses use fixed-line voice services in large numbers, unlike individual consumers, which is illustrated by the falling number of subscribers of these services.In contrast, mobile telephony has flourished over the past few decades. Mobile voice service subscribers have increased by over 3.5 million since 2005. As technology progressed and tariffs offered by network operators became more financially available and popular, Czechs widely switched from pre-paid SIM cards to post-paid ones, used by nearly three-fourths of the population in 2021, along with cheaper tariffs, retail prices of a call per minute and an SMS also decreased.
