Construction industry in Turkey - statistics & facts

The construction industry has considerable importance for Turkey, with its added value to the economy and the employment opportunities it creates for society. The Turkish construction industry grew steadily until 2018, when it began to shrink, then reached nearly one percent negative growth in 2021. The measures taken to prevent the spread of the coronavirus (COVID-19), the delays and cancellations in existing projects, and the decreasing demand for real estate caused this sharp contraction in the industry lately. Even though it has also decreased over recent years, the construction industry’s added value to the country’s gross domestic product (GDP) was still significant, totaling 5.4 percent in 2021.
Furthermore, the country is aware that a well-established and high-quality infrastructure is essential for efficient production, transport, and trade to support economic growth and societal development. Accordingly, the length of motorways and railways in the country has mostly increased since 2003, reaching over 3.5 thousand and 13 thousand kilometers in 2021, respectively.

Rising costs in the industry

Over the last few years, construction spending in Turkey has mainly increased, reaching a new record value of nearly 875 million Turkish lira in 2021. The rapidly rising inflation affected the cost of materials, supplies, labor, and equipment in the construction industry a great deal. Consequently, construction expenses have witnessed a major increase since 2020, with the cost index rising to 829.4 points in January 2023 (the base year being 2015).

Construction companies

In 2022, a total of 42 contractor companies from Turkey took part in the Top 250 International Contractors list published by ENR (Engineering News Record) every year. The leading company on the list became Renaissance Construction, reaching a revenue of 1.4 billion U.S. dollars that year. As of 2021, approximately 271.6 thousand registered enterprises were operating in the Turkish construction industry, which was the highest figure recorded to date.
