Hotel market in Romania - statistics & facts

In recent years, the hotel market in Romania has had a positive evolution in terms of consumer spending and tourism demand. The latter has been supported by the fast development of air transportation, especially by low-cost companies, which doubled Romania’s air traffic over the last decade. In 2020, because of the coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak, the Romanian hotel market recorded one of its lowest revenues, however in 2022 it managed to recover, totaling around 861 million U.S. dollars. By 2024, the hotel segment is forecast to generate a revenue of over one billion U.S. dollars for the first time. One peculiarity of the Romanian hotel market is that compared to other hotel markets from CEE countries, the Romanian one is not as dependent on international tourism. In other words, approximately 86 percent of tourist accommodated are domestic.

Bucharest hotel market

Romania’s capital has one of the most developed hotel markets in the country, dominated by four- and five-star hotels. In terms of hotel transactions, The Ramada Majestic hotel was the most valuable deal closed between 2021 and 2022, worth 13.5 million euros. At the same time, Societatea Companiilor Hoteliere Grand SRL in Bucharest recorded one of the highest revenues in the capital’s hotel market, and a net profit of 30.9 million Romanian lei in 2022.



Foreign tourists

Although only 14 percent of all tourists were foreigners, their number consistently increased in the past years. German and Italian tourists were the most prominent in 2022, making up a third of all European Union tourists accommodated. As for tourist establishments, over 46 percent of all foreign tourists chose 4-star hotels, while nearly 13 percent were accommodated in 5-star hotels. Traveling to Romania is relatively cheap compared to most EU member countries, on average tourists spent 15.4 percent of their budget on restaurants and bars and 4.7 percent on transportation, with almost half of total expenses being accommodation.
