ROA of EU banking industry 2007-2022

There was a significant drop in the average return on assets (ROA) of the EU banking industry in 2020, which was caused by the poor economic conditions due to COVID-19. The ROA of the banking sector in 2020, however, remained well above the value measured during the global financial crisis in 2007 and 2008, and the euro area recession in 2012. As the economy stabilized in 2021, so did the ROA of the banking industry, which stood at 0.46 percent at the end of the year. In 2022, the ROA of the EU banking industry remained relatively high at 0.44 percent.
