As of 2019, the state of Rio de Janeiro had approximately 3,000 square kilometers of urbanized area. The city of Rio de Janeiro is the largest urbanized area of the state with 640 square kilometers, followed by Duque de Caxias with just under 140 square kilometers. In third place, São Gonçalo registered nearly 130 square kilometers.
