In 2022, individuals aged 60 and older in the United States lost more than 990 million U.S. dollars in online investment fraud. This was the cyber crime type causing the most significant monetary damage to the victims over 60 years. Cryptocurrency scams ranked second, causing the victims around 828 million U.S. dollar in losses. Tech support scams followed third, registering nearly 588 million U.S. dollar losses n the examined year.

In some cases, victims do not report any loss amount to the FBI, thereby creating an artificially low overall ransomware loss rate. Lastly, the number only represents what victims report to the FBI via the IC3 and does not account for victims directly reporting to FBI field offices/agents.
