Portugal: issuance of debt securities by FVCs 2023

In Portugal, the issuance of debt securities by financial vehicle corporations (FVC) had a decreasing trend over the time period considered. During the first quarter of 2018, they issued 22.7 billion euros in debt securities, while, during the first quarter of 2021, just 13.67 billion euros. In the third quarter of 2023, the issuance decreased further to 8.44 billion euros.

The source adds that a financial vehicle corporation is "an entity whose principal activity meets these criteria: carries out securitization transactions and its structure is intended to isolate the payment obligations of the undertaking from those of the originator, or the insurance or reinsurance undertaking (in the case of insurance-linked securitizations); it issues debt securities, other debt instruments, securitization fund units, and/or financial derivatives and/or legally or economically owns assets underlying the issue of these financing instruments that are offered for sale to the public or sold on the basis of private placements".
