Government budget for food security Indonesia 2019-2024
In 2024, the Indonesian government has allocated a planned budget of over 114 trillion Indonesian rupiah for food security. This indicated an increase of over 13 percent from the previous year and over 50 percent compared to 2020. The government prioritizes the food security budget to increase the availability, accessibility, and stabilization of food prices in the country, including a focus on food estate development.
President Joko Widodo launched the food estate program to develop vast agricultural land for crop production, mainly focusing on rice. Undertaken by the Ministry of Defense, the initiative aims to enhance Indonesia's food security amid global food crisis issues. Thousands of hectares of land areas have been proposed for the program development. However, environmental concerns have recently arisen as some proposed areas have unclear map locations and overlap with protected peatlands or existing forestry concession areas.
