In 2022, around 98.3 percent of the Indian population in urban areas had access to improved water sources, with the vast majority coming from piped systems. Meanwhile, roughly 33 percent of the rural population had access to piped systems, although overall access to improved sources was similar to that of urban areas. The share of population in India with access to improved water sources has increased since 2015.
