Milan: births 2000-2022

In 22 years, the number of live births in the 133 municipalities constituting the metropolitan city of Milan sank by 12,500 newborns, highlighting the decline of births that has affected the city and its suburbs. In particular, over the last decade, this number decreased by 20 percent, settling at around 23,000 childbirths in the 2020s.

Supplementary notes

1) The sudden drop between 2001 and 2002 is caused by the separation of 50 municipalities included in the former province of Milan to establish the new province of Monza.

2) Until 2014, the data refer to the province of Milan, whose functions were replaced from 2015 by the metropolitan city, without any territorial change. All the municipalities belonging to the former province became part of the new administrative unit.
