This statistic illustrates the distribution of the US population with health insurance in 2017 and 2018, by coverage type. In 2011, some 15.7 percent of the U.S. population had no health insurance. This share had decreased to under nine percent by 2017.

U.S. population with health insurance

In 2018, over half of the U.S. population had health insurance coverage through their place of employment, some 55 percent. Approximately 34 percent had coverage through some form of government plan in the same year.

The United States spent approximately 10,200 U.S. dollars per capita in 2017 while in comparison, Canadian citizens expended some 4,800 U.S. dollars per capita in the same year. In 2010, 16 percent of the U.S. population had no health care coverage however this value had decreased to 8.5 percent by 2018. A large portion of those without health insurance are between 19 and 25 years of age. About 14.3 percent of 19 to 25 year-olds in the United States did not have health insurance in 2018, while the percentage was at around 10 percent among all persons aged under 65 years.
