Founded in Birmingham, England in 1765 by Sampson Lloyd II, John Taylor and their two sons, Lloyds Banking Group is one the United Kingdom's oldest and biggest banks. Lloyds Banking Group, which consists of Lloyds Bank, Halifax, Bank of Scotland and Scottish Widows, has millions of retail and commercial customers, making it one of the most popular banks in Europe. However, the group has been struggling with losing customers in recent years, as customers seems to more and more move away from traditional banks to more newly founded online-only banks. The group employs approximately 66,000 individuals, with the majority headquartered in the UK.

The banking industry in the United Kingdom is dominated by five large, chartered banks, and Lloyds is one of them. In addition to Lloyds, the five largest banks consist of HSBC, Barclays, NatWest, and Standard Chartered. Lloyds Banking Group has consistently held the title of being one of Europe's largest banks. In terms of total assets, Lloyds Banking Group was the 11th largest bank in Europe in 2022, with total assets worth over one trillion euros. In its home country, Lloyds was the third largest bank in 2023, also in terms of total assets, after HSBC and Barclays. The Group is also a top European bank in terms of market capitalization, and also ranks second among the UK banks.

Lloyds Banking Group operates in several different segments: retail banking, commercial banking, insurance and wealth, and equity investments and central items, though the largest segment is retail banking. More than half of their customer deposits - which exceeded 471 billion British pounds in 2023 – came from retail banking.
