Number of public transport passengers in Egypt 2015/2016-2019/2020
As of 2019/2020, public transport authorities and companies reported that around 2.16 billion individuals used public transport. This was a decrease compared to the previous year when the number of passengers using the transportation services of the government, public business, and private companies reached 2.78 billion.
Moreover, informal private drivers play a major role in transportation in Egypt. For instance, almost 45 percent of the registered buses in the country were privately owned compared to 8.5 percent for public ones as of the end of 2021.
